The short answer

An AI domain name generator answers one question: "is the .com available?" An AI business name generator has to answer five: is it memorable, brandable, trademarkable, are the social handles free, and can you turn it into a logo this week? We ran seven of 2026's most-used business name generators through that five-question gauntlet. Best free overall: Namelix (8.8/10). Best trademark + human validation: Atom (8.4/10). Best name-to-logo pipeline: Looka (7.9/10). Widest live availability check on our own tool: Nomlen (7.7/10). Full scores and methodology below.

How we scored: business-name criteria, not domain criteria

Unlike our domain generator test, this one uses business-name criteria — naming a company is a different job than finding a domain. Five scores out of 10 each, weighted as shown:

  • Name quality for a company brand (30%) — does it produce names that sound like companies, not keyword mashups?
  • Trademark screening depth (25%) — does it check USPTO/conflict databases, or just hope you will?
  • Free limits and signup friction (20%) — generation cost, caps, account requirements.
  • Social-handle checking (15%) — can you check Instagram/X/TikTok availability in the same flow?
  • Name-to-brand pipeline (10%) — logo, brand kit, or human naming contest to finish the job.

Sources: each tool's official pages and published pricing, verified October 21, 2026, plus two independent reviews — techraisal.com's Namelix audit (August 2026) and thetoolsverse.com's Looka review (October 2026). Disclosure: Nomlen is our own product; it is scored on verifiable specs only.

Weights: naming quality 30%, trademark screening 25%, free limits 20%, social handles 15%, brand pipeline 10%.

1. Namelix — best free AI business name generator (8.8/10)

Namelix, built by the team behind the Brandmark logo tool, is the tool independent reviewers keep returning to, and our testing agreed. It trains a generative model on real brand names instead of gluing your keyword to suffixes, offers eight naming styles (short, compound, alternate spelling, non-English words, and more), and — the separator: learns within a session — heart or skip names and suggestions sharpen around your taste.

Every candidate comes with a live domain check across .com and 15+ extensions, and one click sends a name to Brandmark for an instant logo concept. Naming is free and unlimited with no account. Logos are the monetization: one-time packages at $35 (Basic), $95 (Designer), and $195 (Enterprise) per Brandmark's current pricing (verified July 2026).

Weaknesses: the trademark story is thin — soft conflict warnings at best, and independent audits note it will happily return a name that is already a registered mark. No social-handle checking. Output drifts generic when your keyword is vague, so feed it a real business description, not "tech".

2. Atom — best trademark screening and human validation (8.4/10)

Atom is the 2024 rebrand of Squadhelp (confirmed by DNJournal's coverage of the move), and it is the only tool here that treats naming as a legal and commercial decision, not a brainstorming game. Its free AI naming tool generates ~100 ranked, brandable names in ~30 seconds with no signup — and it runs a USPTO trademark screen on them, checking .com, .ai, .io and more for availability.

The paid side is where Atom stands alone: naming contests judged by 200,000+ creatives, with 30,000+ contests run to date. Pricing, verified on atom.com's pricing page (October 2026): Bronze $299, Gold $449, Platinum $749, Managed $1,499, with the creative award included and full rights to the winning name. Managed tiers add audience testing and comprehensive trademark screening reports. Atom notes a branding agency charges $15,000–$50,000 for a handful of directions; a $299 contest returns hundreds of entries. Trustpilot: 4.7 stars across 1,140 reviews.

Weaknesses: the free AI tool is .com-centric and some "suggestions" are premium marketplace listings for sale. Paid tiers start where the free tools end — fine for a funded startup, heavy for a side project.

3. Looka — best name-to-logo pipeline (7.9/10)

Looka's business name generator is competent on its own — generate by keyword, abstract concept, or industry with no keyword at all, with potential search volume shown per name. Its real value is what happens next: the name flows straight into an AI logo maker and a full brand kit — business cards, social templates, letterhead — without re-entering anything.

Pricing is where buyers get surprised, so here are the verified October 2026 numbers: design is free; downloading costs $20 for a low-resolution PNG (Basic), $65 for the full vector package (Premium: PNG, EPS, SVG, PDF with full ownership), and $96/year for the Brand Kit. Multiple reviewers agree the $20 tier is nearly unusable professionally — budget $65 as the real minimum, not $20.

Weaknesses: no trademark screening, no social-handle checks, and template-driven output can feel generic. Each logo purchase is per-design.

4. Nomlen — widest live availability per name (7.7/10)

Disclosure: our product; every fact below is verifiable on the live site. Nomlen's business name generator takes a plain description of the business and returns 100 brandable names — each with its domain checked against live registry data across 1,100+ TLDs. Every name is typeset as a wordmark in its own typeface and palette, and shortlists save in your browser with no account.

Where it loses points: it answers the availability question brilliantly and the trademark question not at all — no screening, no social-handle checks, no logo pipeline. Use it to verify a name is ownable online, then do the legal check elsewhere.

5. Shopify — fastest path to a live store (7.2/10)

Shopify's business name generator is free and unlimited, generating roughly 100 names per search with instant .com availability. If you are naming an e-commerce store you will open on Shopify anyway, nothing beats the path from name to checkout.

Weaknesses: availability checks run against a daily-updated database, not live registry data — re-verify with a live checker before you commit. Name quality is functional keyword combinations, and there is no trademark screening.

6. NameSnack — best for descriptive local-business names (6.9/10)

NameSnack is a free, ad-supported generator that leans descriptive rather than invented — "Austin Plumbing Pros" rather than "Plumbio". For a local business where the name helps with foot traffic and local search, that bias is a feature, not a bug. It checks .com availability inline and includes a basic logo generator.

Weaknesses: ad-supported experience, .com-focused, no trademark or social checks, and the logo output is basic compared with Looka or Brandmark.

7. BizNameWiz — simple and free (6.4/10)

BusinessNameGenerator.com's BizNameWiz is a straightforward free generator with domain suggestions — fine as a first-brainstorm stop, but it offers no screening, no handles, no pipeline, and the most template-like name quality of the group.

The 5-step validation funnel (do this after any generator)

No generator on this list — free or paid — replaces the funnel. Run every finalist through these five steps before you print a business card:

  1. Generate wide. Save 30–50 names across two different tools (we suggest Namelix + one descriptive generator like NameSnack). Sleep on the list; names that felt exciting at midnight often read as bland in the morning, and vice versa.
  2. Domain check, live. Confirm the exact-match .com or target TLD against live registry data — a cached check can lie. No clean domain, no name.
  3. Trademark screen. Run the USPTO's TESS database (or your country's equivalent) on every finalist. Atom's screen and Namelix's warnings are starting points, not legal opinions — this is where founders get burned.
  4. Social handles. Check Instagram, X, TikTok, and YouTube for the exact handle. A name with a squatter on its handle is a name you will be explaining forever.
  5. Logo test. Typeset the finalists as wordmarks (Looka, Brandmark, or Nomlen's wordmark view) at profile-photo size. If it can't be read at 100 pixels, simplify before you buy files.

What surprised us in testing

The free tools won on speed, the paid tool won on safety. Not one free generator does trademark properly — the one legal question that can cost you a rebrand six months in. If the name goes on contracts, packaging, or an app-store listing, Atom's contest tiers are the cheapest professional-grade validation here.

The real price is always one tier above the headline. Looka's "$20 logo" is a low-res PNG with no transparency; the usable file set is $65. Namelix's headline is honestly free — the $35–$195 is downstream and optional.

Don't confuse a domain tool with a naming tool. A generator that returns 100 available .coms has done availability's job; it has not told you whether the name is trademarkable, pronounceable on a call, or spellable from a podcast mention. That's what the business-name criteria above are for.

How to pick: a 60-second decision guide

  • Startup or SaaS, zero budget? → Namelix for invented brandable names.
  • Name must survive legal review? → Atom — free AI tool first, $299+ contest when it's serious.
  • Need a logo and brand kit this week? → Looka; budget the $65 Premium tier.
  • Want availability depth on every name? → Nomlen (1,100+ TLDs checked live).
  • Opening a Shopify store? → Shopify's generator, then re-verify availability independently.
  • Want AI to brainstorm from a description? → AI Domain GPT, free, no signup.
  • Local or service business? → NameSnack or Shopify for descriptive names that help local search.

AI business name generators: FAQs

What is the best AI business name generator in 2026?

For naming creativity with zero cost: Namelix (8.8/10). For trademark screening and human validation: Atom (8.4/10). For walking away with a finished logo: Looka (7.9/10).

Are AI business name generators free?

Generation is free on every tool tested — Namelix, Shopify, NameSnack, BizNameWiz, Atom, and Nomlen all generate without payment or signup. Money enters at logos (Looka $65, Brandmark $35–$195) and Atom's naming contests ($299+).

Do I need to sign up to use them?

No. None of the seven require an account for generation. Nomlen saves shortlists in your browser; Looka asks for an email only at download.

Can an AI generator check if my business name is trademarked?

Only Atom runs a real USPTO trademark screen at generation time, and only its paid tiers produce comprehensive reports. Namelix shows soft warnings. None of these is a legal opinion — always run a USPTO TESS (or national equivalent) search yourself for names you'll build a business on.

What is the difference between a business name generator and a domain name generator?

A business name generator brainstorms the brand name itself; a domain name generator finds an available web address for it. Our domain generator test scores availability depth; this test scores naming quality, trademark screening, and the path to a finished brand. The best workflow uses both: name first, then verify the domain.

Which generator checks social media handles?

None of the seven does it comprehensively in-flow. Looka's name generator shows search volume but not handle availability. Check Instagram, X, TikTok, and YouTube manually for every finalist.

Is Namelix really free?

Yes — name generation is free and unlimited with no signup, per Brandmark (see our Namelix alternative breakdown for more free options). The optional paid step is the logo: one-time Brandmark packages at $35 (Basic), $95 (Designer), and $195 (Enterprise), verified July 2026.

How much does an Atom naming contest cost?

Bronze $299, Gold $449, Platinum $749, and Managed $1,499 — each including the creative award and full rights to the winning name, verified on atom.com October 2026. Expect 300+ to 1,000+ entries depending on tier.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Each tool was judged on business-name criteria rather than domain criteria, weighted as follows: name quality for a company brand 30%, trademark screening depth 25%, free limits and signup friction 20%, social-handle checking 15%, and name-to-brand pipeline 10%. Scores draw on each tool's official pages and published pricing, verified October 21, 2026, plus two independent reviews of Namelix and Looka.
Atom, the 2024 rebrand of Squadhelp, is the only tested tool that treats naming as a legal and commercial decision. Its free AI tool runs a USPTO trademark screen on generated names, and its paid contests are judged by 200,000+ creatives across 30,000+ contests run to date. Atom contrasts its $299 starting contest with the $15,000-$50,000 a branding agency charges.
Shopify's generator checks availability against a daily-updated database rather than live registry data, so a name it shows as available may have been registered since the last update. The test's validation funnel therefore insists on a live domain check as its own step: confirm the exact-match .com or target TLD against live registry data before committing. No clean domain, no name.
Because first reactions mislead. The funnel's first step is to generate 30 to 50 names across two different tools and sleep on the list: names that felt exciting at midnight often read as bland in the morning, and the reverse is also true. Only after that pause do you run the live domain check, trademark screen, social-handle check, and logo test on the survivors.
